Rivers in reverse: Upstream-migrating dechannelization and flooding cause avulsions on fluvial fans

چکیده
Abstract The process of river avulsion builds floodplains and fills alluvial basins. We report on a new style identified in the Landsat satellite record. found 69 examples retrogradational avulsions rivers densely forested fluvial fans Andean New Guinean Retrogradational are initiated by channel blockage, e.g., logjam, that with sediment forces water overbank (dechannelization), which creates chevron-shaped flooding pattern. Dechannelization waves travel upstream at median rate 387 m/yr last average for 13 yr; many show multiple dechannelizing events same reach. ends is complete when finds flow path. simulate upstream-migrating dechannelization one-dimensional morphodynamic model open flow. Observations consistent results blockages can cause steep (10−2 to 10−3), low-discharge (~101 m3 s−1) rivers. This illustrates floodplain sedimentation unaccounted ecologic stratigraphic models.

Alluvial Fans Formed by Channelized Fluvial
Alluvial fans and fan-deltas are of three basic types: those built up primarily by the action of constantly avulsing river and stream channels, those constructed by sheet flows, and those resulting from. ~e successive deposition of debris flows. The present analysis is directed toward the first two types. A mechamstic formulation of flow and sediment transport through river channels is combined...
متن کاملFlooding and Flow Path Selection on Alluvial Fans and Deltas
The surfaces of alluvial fans and river deltas (collectively fans) are often dissected by a small number of channels radiating from the fan apex. On long timescales, channels migrate via avulsion, the process of channel bed deposition and abandonment that often results in catastrophic flooding and loss of life on densely populated fans. We present results of an experimental fan that creates rea...
متن کاملCompounding effects of sea level rise and fluvial flooding.
Sea level rise (SLR), a well-documented and urgent aspect of anthropogenic global warming, threatens population and assets located in low-lying coastal regions all around the world. Common flood hazard assessment practices typically account for one driver at a time (e.g., either fluvial flooding only or ocean flooding only), whereas coastal cities vulnerable to SLR are at risk for flooding from...
متن کاملFlooding on California’s Russian River: Role of atmospheric rivers
[1] Experimental observations collected during meteorological field studies conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration near the Russian River of coastal northern California are combined with SSM/I satellite observations offshore to examine the role of landfalling atmospheric rivers in the creation of flooding. While recent studies have documented the characteristics and im...
متن کاملElevated methylmercury concentrations and loadings during flooding in Minnesota rivers.
Previous studies have identified flooded landscapes (e.g., wetlands, impoundments) as sites of elevated methylmercury (MeHg) production. Here we report MeHg and total Hg (THg) concentrations and mass loadings in rivers in Minnesota during major flooding episodes in the summer of 2002. Frequent intense precipitation events throughout the summer resulted in extraordinarily wet conditions in east-...
